How to stay safe out and about

Before heading out of the door - whether you are visiting the shops or meeting up with friends and family - remember these useful tips to protect you and your community from Covid.

Thank you for continuing to work from home where you can and please continue to travel safely by planning your journey in advance.

Plan ahead:

  • Avoid making unnecessary trips.
  • Combine trips where possible.
  • Plan your route, including any breaks.
  • Use a direct route where possible.
  • With the light nights consider travelling later in the day.
  • Before you travel, check with Go North East, Nexus, Tyne and Wear Metro, Stagecoach or Arriva for the latest regional travel advice.
  • Pre-book tickets, a time slot or table online.
  • Check facilities including toilets and car parks are open.
  • Have a plan B in case of overcrowding.
  • Self-test regularly.

Do not travel if you:

  • Have Covid symptoms. You should get a test and follow the stay at home guidance.
  • Have been told by the NHS Test and Trace service to self-isolate.
  • Are self-isolating as a result of Covid symptoms or are sharing a household or support bubble with somebody with symptoms.

Leaving the house:

  • Download the NHS COVID-19 app before you travel.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Make sure to pack:
    - A mask/face covering to wear in crowded areas such as public transport
    - Tickets, contactless payment card or pass
    - Hand sanitiser
    - Essential medicines
    - Tissues

Transport:

  • Consider walking or cycling where possible.
  • Follow guidance on how to travel on public transport safely.
  • Be patient and follow onboard guidance.
  • Wear face coverings, unless exempt.
  • Minimise close contact with people you do not live with, where possible.

General tips:

  • Check in using the NHS COVID-19 app where you see official NHS COVID-19 QR code posters.
  • Leave overcrowded situations and return another time.
  • Stay outdoors, rather than indoors, where possible.
  • Plan ahead to avoid peak times where possible.

Arriving home:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Use ‘black bag’ waste bins or litter bins to dispose of face coverings. Do not use a recycling bin.
  • If you develop Covid-19 symptoms you should get a test and follow the stay at home guidance.
